Can anyone reccomend a better program then ffdshow?

I don’t remember if ffdshow came on my computer. If you know if it is a standard windows vista 32 program too that would be appritiated. It reads all of my files and makes thumbnails. I just converted a video for mp4 format, ipod format, and every since then, my folder named after my computer crashes when I open it. Making all of the still working files un-accessable. I was told by others having my problem on their website that some can move the file and use a different reader to see it. I have VLC, but I am afraid if I move the file to another area, because I can use cmd prompt to problem to do that, I will cut myself off of a greater portion of my computer. Please provide instructions of how to get the software and if you can provide a link of how to overide ffdshow, or even get rid of it, that would be GREATLY, greatly appritiated.

I converted rmvb files to avi using a converter but the video quality changes. Why does this happen?

Is there a way to convert rvmb file that would retain the video and audio quality after being converted. I want to burn rmvb files to dvd to free some space on my computer. Help!
